Part marking for prototyping and custom parts manufacturing.

Updated: Jun 27, 2023

Benefits of product traceability.

Product traceability means being able to track & trace individual components all the way through the supply chain, from parts to finished product. For some products this is mandated and regulated; but in general, it is good practice and carries several benefits for manufacturing businesses. If done correctly, only significant force can remove, damage or cause the marks to become illegible.

Laser marking ensures the component doesn't lose its identifying tags, even when they are utilised in harsh conditions.

There are various common traceability procedures, but the two main methods are Chain traceability and internal traceability. While similar, both methods provide comprehensive traceability in different areas.

Customer confidence: knowing you have processes in place throughout your supply chain to ensure you can identify any quality issues in a timely manner gives buyers the confidence to deal with you knowing your product will be problem free. Sharing this information also shows customers that you are committed to ensuring a quality product and builds trust in business relationships.

Greater business efficiency: early identification of errors ensures the error is not compounded by time, reducing waste and reducing the possibility of substandard components entering the supply chain with greater cost to rectify the issue.

Business protection: the ability to identify a problem and rectify the situation swiftly is crucial. How quickly a business can do this and take control of the situation will depend on the robustness of the traceability processes in use; and the way a business deals with any issues will affect their reputation one way or another. There are two main areas of product traceability:

Internal traceability is usually limited in scope to the business manufacturing one specific part of the end product, generally for their own internal records and KPI tracking; whilst

Chain traceability means suppliers can track all parts of their end product from start to finish, and the end user can see where the individual parts came from.

The reason this is relevant to Javik Laser is that we can permanently mark items in a way that does not affect the integrity of individual parts. When done correctly only significant force can remove, damage or cause the marks to become illegible. Laser marking the component ensures it doesn’t lose its identifiers even when the part is utilised in harsh conditions. Critical components can be marked in such a way that they are identical to unmarked parts in size, weight and performance factors, just with the ability to be identified. Things that might be useful as a marker on individual parts –

· serial numbers

· part ID number

· date of manufacture/expiry

· Company logo

· Bar codes/QR codes
